Why do we love the “dad hat”? Because we invented it over 20 years ago with the ’47 FRANCHISE. Our relaxed fitted hat, the ’47 FRANCHISE comes in a range of sizes for “The Perfect Fit.”
But how do you find your “Perfect Fit”?
Knowing your hat size is important for both comfort and style. Many people wear ill-fitting hats simply because they don’t know their size. You can find the hat that’s right for you with our Headwear Style Guide, and we’ll tell you all you need to know about how to measure hat size in the sections below.
Understanding Hat Sizes
There are two main hat sizing systems in the United States.
The numeric system uses a number to indicate the size, normally ranging from 6 ¾ to 8. For example, the most common fitted hat size for men is 7 3/8, while the most common for women is 7 ¼.
For our fitted hats, including the ’47 FRANCHISE, we use a general sizing system, with Small, Medium, Large, XL, and 2XL.
Snapback hats like our ’47 HITCH or ’47 TRUCKER are adjustable, so there’s no need to know your hat size – just snap it to the fit that works for you. The same goes for our adjustable strap hats like the ’47 CLEAN UP. Just tighten or loosen the strap to a comfortable fit and you’re good to go.
What You’ll Need to Measure Your Hat Size
The most important thing you’ll need is a flexible measuring tape, also known as tailor’s tape. This will help determine the circumference of your head, which will help determine your hat size. It’s also helpful to stand in front of a mirror to see how the measuring tape is on your head.
If you don’t have measuring tape, a piece of string will do. Wrap the string around your head and use a ruler to measure the distance. Make sure to use something taut; you don’t want to use yarn or cord that can stretch and give you an inaccurate measurement.
Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring Your Head
Step One:
Place the measuring tape around the back of your head, then wrap the tape around your head just above the ears and eyebrows where your hat will normally rest. You can use a mirror to make sure it’s placed where your hat would sit.
Step Two:
Make sure the tape isn’t too loose or too tight. You’ll want the same level of comfort with your new hat.
Step Three:
Measure the circumference of your head. Do this several times to ensure a consistent measurement. For best results, have someone else measure for you. If you’re using string, measure the results with a ruler.
Finding Your Hat Size
Once you’ve determined your head circumference, you’ll need to find your hat size using this size chart. Just match your measurement to the corresponding hat size.
If your measurement falls between two sizes, go up to the next size to ensure your fit isn’t too tight. Better to have a little more room than to be uncomfortably tight.
Finding The Perfect Fit
Remember to measure your head accurately. Find your correct size for maximum comfort and confidence.
