Introducing The Foundation Tee: Bringing the 90s Back

Our apparel design team at ’47 has unveiled something they've been working on for a while. It’s a modern, heavyweight t-shirt incorporating elements of classic ’90s tees. The thinking was, “To build something big, you’ve got to have a solid foundation.” And so the ’47 Foundation Tee was born, a contemporary take on a ’90s tee that’s wider through the body with a drop shoulder and slightly higher neck.

What is a Heavyweight T-Shirt?

We built the ’47 Foundation Tee from 100% heavyweight cotton. So what does this mean? What is a heavyweight t-shirt? To get technical, our Foundation Tee is made with 220 GSM cotton jersey, meaning there are 220 grams of fabric per square meter. The higher the GSM, the heavier and more durable the shirt will be, making the Foundation Tee one of the heaviest out there. With a heavyweight cotton t-shirt, you’ll get a sturdier structure that holds its shape.

Bringing ’90s Style Back

Some of the trademarks of' 90s-style shirts include a higher neck, a wider collar, and a taller hem, all features we’ve brought back with the Foundation Tee. But most significantly is the tee's wider body. Looking back at old ’90s music videos and the Hip-Hop and Britpop fashions of the day, you’ll see oversized t-shirts with drop-shoulder sleeves, just like the ’47 Foundation Tee.

The Benefits of the ’47 Foundation Tee

The sturdier build of a heavyweight shirt will retain its shape more than the average tee. The cotton jersey of the ’47 Foundation Tee creates a stiffer construction, which gives it less drape and greater durability wash after wash. And since it’s a heavier-weight cotton, the Foundation tee will be more comfortable in cooler weather, making it great for layering any time of year.
